German retailer REWE is removing the additional plastic lid on all 500g cups of natural yogurt and from April on all 500g cups of soy yogurt on its "ja!" brands.

The company said this will result in the reduction of more than 69 tons of plastic waste every year.

For those customers who need a convenient, hygienic and permanently reusable closure for opened cups, REWE sells food-safe and dishwasher-safe reusable lids made of platinum silicone.

By the end of 2030, the food company said it aims to remove, reduce or make more environmentally friendly all private-label packaging and service packaging where possible.

By the end of 2025, all plastic packaging from REWE's own brands that cannot be avoided should be recyclable.

In addition, REWE wants to use a total of 20% less plastic in its own-brand packaging by the end of 2025. For paper packaging, only certified raw materials are used where possible. REWE has already abolished plastic bags, plastic disposable tableware and plastic packaging for organic fruit and vegetables, as well as introducing reusable freshness nets.
