The US dairy industry body has partnered with artificial intelligence services provider PIPA as it aims to discover novel health benefits and applications for milk.

Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), the US dairy checkoff board, says that leveraging the technology would lead to new commercial opportunities in milk. DMI will also focus on analyzing scientific evidence to validate and build new product claims.

PIPA has a suite of services geared towards different industries, from food and beverage to nutraceuticals and life sciences. Its AI and data-enhanced platform LEAP – which DMI will use – can analyze different datasets as well as scientific evidence to enable researchers to gain new insights into health and nutrition of a particular commodity. For example, the company has a ‘milk knowledge’ software-as-a-service (SaaS) app that can link dairy molecules directly with the health benefits these provide in order to accelerate functional product R&D and provide science-backed health claims.

PIPA already works with several food and ingredient companies, including confectionery major Mars and ingredient company EverGrain.

Propelling personalization

DMI president and CEO Barbara O’Brian called the partnership ‘a groundbreaking development for the US dairy industry’ adding that using the technology can enable dairy producers to better address market opportunities in personalized nutrition.

“Dairy farmers' long-standing investments in nutrition research have made significant contributions to the portfolio of credible science demonstrating the positive impact dairy foods have on overall health and wellness,” O’Brian explained. “The partnership with PIPA will leverage the power of AI to uncover dairy-centric health and wellness opportunities that can meet the growing world's needs for personalized nutrition solutions.”

PIPA’s chief commercial officer, Eric Hamborg, said the partnership would unearth insights and commercial opportunities at never-before-seen speed.

“Dairy is an unquestionable treasure trove of health benefits waiting to be discovered. With PIPA's technology and the subject matter expertise of DMI, we'll unlock novel research and commercialization opportunities for the industry with a speed and accuracy we've never seen before.”
