Nestlé’s quiet exit from global methane-cutting alliance has sparked fresh scrutiny over its climate commitments

Food and beverage giant, Nestlé has confirmed its withdrawal from a global alliance for cutting methane emissions.

The Dairy Methane Action Alliance launched in December 2023 with the aim of reducing the impact of dairy farming on global warming.

All members of the organisation, including Danone, Kraft Heinz and Starbucks, commit to publicly measuring and disclosing methane emissions from their dairy supply chains, and publish plans to reduce those emissions over time.

Questions were raised over Nestle’s involvement after the company’s logo vanished from the initiative’s website last month.

“Nestle regularly reviews its memberships of external organisations,” said a spokesperson for the Swiss company. “As part of this process, we have decided to discontinue our membership of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance.”

The multinational did not comment on why it’s chosen to exit the alliance, but said it would continue to work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, throughout its supply chains and was sticking to its net zero commitment by 2050.

Nestlé and sustainability

Nestlé’s departure from the Dairy Methane Action Alliance raises questions about the transparency and accountability of its climate strategy.

While the company insists it remains committed to cutting emissions, its reluctance to disclose specific reasons for the withdrawal may fuel doubts among environmental advocates and industry observers.

As pressure mounts on food and beverage giants to demonstrate genuine progress toward sustainability, Nestlé’s next steps will be closely watched.
