In order to reduce food waste, we’ve seen ‘less-than-perfect’ fruit and vegetables reaching the marketplace, and now one company in the Netherlands is trying to make a difference in the dairy industry by turning ‘wasted’ cheese into a new product, Spread-it.
The product, from AND Cheesetrade, uses waste cheese as the basis for the product, which was an award-winner at the recent SIAL food innovation show in Paris, France.
The company not only makes a product, but also assists cheese manufacturers turn waste products into profits, and reduces carbon footprints by reducing waste. The company picks up the cheeses from producers, for example off cuts, and supermarkets. Then the cheese is processed into Spread-it, which is then sold back to the supermarkets.
The Spread it product, which can be used as a spread or a dip, is available in seven flavors: Natural; Light; Herbs; Tomato; Mushroom; Chili; and Gouda.
DairyReporter spoke with AND Cheesetrade’s managing director, David Bakker, at the event about the circular economy, and the Spread-it product that was launched at the show.
