Lactalis brand Lactel moves into Indian market

Lactalis’ French milk brand Lactel, has launched its UHT toned milk 1 liter packet into India.

Groupe Lactalis already has a foothold in the Indian dairy market through the ownership of Indian dairy brands such as Tirumala, Anik and Prabhat.

Lactel UHT milk, which will retail for Rs70 ($0.94) comes fortified with Vitamin A & D.

Rahul Kumar, managing director, Lactalis India, said “UHT milk, with market size of 800,000 liters a day in the country, is currently sold at Rs 64-74 a liter. Lactalis has priced the product at Rs 70 a liter. We would like to have a market share of 5% (30-40,000 liters a day) in the next two years in this segment."

Lactalis India comprises the three companies of Tirumala, Prabhat and Anik, which it acquired during the last six years. The firm expects revenue of Rs 17bn ($228.8m) from Tirumala, Rs 14bn ($18.8m) from Prabhat Dairy and Rs 6bn ($80.8m) from Anik for financial year 2020-21.

Groupe Lactalis first acquired Tirumala in 2014, followed by Anik and Prabhat in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
