While traditional kefir is a dairy-based drink, the clue is in the name here - UK-based PiQi’s newly-unveiled range offers vegan-certified water-based probiotic drinks that contain so-called kefir cultures. What the company has come up with is a kefir-inspired fermented sparkling beverage that’s said to boast ‘all the great gut health benefits of traditional kefir but without the dairy’. This includes 30 billion live cultures per bottle according to the manufacturer.
PiQi’s Water Kefir, sold in 750ml bottles, is made from water, ‘water kefir grains’ referred to as kefir culture, and organic sugar. The drink has a lightly tangy flavor and contains vegan lactic acid bacteria. Four flavors are available: Ginger & Lemon; Butterfly Pea Flower; Grapefruit & Cardamom, and Original.
