According to Persistence Market Research, the market is expected to be valued at US$ 15.5 billion in 2026 and reach US$ 24.1 billion by 2033.
The milk protein market involves the extracting and processing of protein compounds found in milk such as whey. These dairy-protein ingredients are used in food and beverages, dietary supplements, infant formula, and animal feed. In addition to supplying essential amino acids, milk proteins provide functional properties that enhance texture, stability and nutritional value.
Persistence Market Research said milk protein production is benefitting from established dairy processing infrastructure and expanding applications in specialised nutrition.
The report noted that food manufacturers require ingredients that deliver functionality, meet nutritional specifications, have a reliable supply, and perform under different processing conditions. Meanwhile, producers of supplements and specialised nutrition often need protein concentration, digestibility, solubility, and sensory quality.
The research highlighted three milk protein product categories: concentrates, isolates and hydrolyzed protein.
It estimates that concentrates will lead the market in 2026 because of their cost-effectiveness, versatility, and broad use in dairy products, beverages, bakery goods, and nutritional formulations. Their functional properties make them suitable for manufacturers seeking protein enrichment alongside texture and stability.
However, it said that isolates are expected to be the fastest-growing product type, as they offer higher protein concentration and can provide lower-lactose formulations, making them attractive for sports nutrition, functional beverages, and specialised foods.
Lastly, hydrolyzed proteins play a role in products that require specific digestibility characteristics, including specialised infant and clinical nutrition.
The research said that food and beverages will remain the largest segment, accounting for more than 47% of market revenue in 2026.
However, dietary supplements are forecast to grow the fastest among the categories of food and beverages, dietary supplements, infant formula, and animal feed, supported by interest in sports nutrition, active lifestyles, muscle maintenance, and convenient protein consumption.
Regionally, North America leads the market, accounting for 40% of revenue in 2026, due to demand for protein-fortified foods, sports nutrition, functional beverages, and convenient dairy products.
Europe remains an important market because of its established dairy-processing industry and demand for functional nutrition, infant nutrition, and protein-rich foods. The research highlights the UK and Germany as countries that offer opportunities in fortified dairy products, nutritional beverages, and specialised ingredients.
Meanwhile, Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region, supported by rising protein consumption, premium dairy products, infant nutrition, and expanding sports nutrition adoption. It said that China and India offer substantial opportunities across nutritional supplements and protein-enriched foods.
