Tetra Pak has installed its high speed A3/Speed filling machine with the product's first customer, Chinese dairy Mengniu.

The machine for Tetra Primsa Aseptic portion packs runs at 24,000 packs per hour (seven packs per second), and the company claims it is one of the world’s fastest filling machines for carton packages.

Trevor Eastwood, product platform director, Tetra Pak, told DairyReporter.com the machine cuts operational costs by 35%.

This refers to all costs associated with the running of the filling machine, including product material and utilities,” he said. “The machines also offer high food safety, with a unique FDA-filed aseptic process.”

Mengniu decided to buy the Tetra Pak A3/Speed after a 10 month field test at its dairy plant in Ma’anshan City.

In 2012 the dairy was running two low speed filling machines at full capacity, producing 94m packs a year.

In the field test, 100m packages were produced on one line within 10 months of installation, and the dairy placed its order for three more lines,

The Tetra Pak A3/Speed tripled Mengniu’s line productivity, and increased production capacity, Tetra Pak reports.

Eastwood said the machine has allowed Mengniu to address a demand for flavoured milk.

The dairy is using the filling machine for its premium flavoured milk, Latte,” said Eastwood. “Latte is Mengniu’s own brand produced in three flavours: vanilla, chocolate and banana.

“The market for portion packs is growing rapidly, largely driven by changing consumer behaviour, particularly the trend for people to eat and drink while on-the-go.”
