Bored Cow – the first brand and product line from foodtech firm Tomorrow Farms – is marketed as a milk alternative that ‘does it all’ in terms of functionality, making the products directly comparable to traditional dairy milk. This functional and nutritional benefits are down to the brand’s partnership with Perfect Day, the precision fermentation specialist, which provides the non-animal whey protein at the heart of the product.
Perfect Day’s precision fermentation-derived whey is claimed to be nutritionally-identical to the protein found in cow’s milk. As a result, Bored Cow’s beverages contain 8g of protein and are lactose-free and a source of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
The range – originally coming in three flavors: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry – was first launched in 2022 and was available to purchase online. In March 2023, Tomorrow Farms also launched Bored Cow Original, a plain version of the product, and released reformulated versions of the three flavored milks.
The range’s availability in retail is a significant step to offering non-animal milk dairy milk products to the wider consumer market at a time when demand for dairy milk is in decline. The product range could appeal to both lactose-intolerant shoppers as well as environment-conscious consumers who avoid dairy due to its climate impact. Meanwhile, Bored Cow’s milk alternatives, through an ISO-aligned lifecycle assessment, were found to use around 96% less land, 67% less water and is responsible for 44% less emissions compared to traditional and organic milk production.
Sprouts will offer all four of Bored Cow’s flavors: Original (32oz), Chocolate (11oz), Vanilla (11oz) and Strawberry (11oz).
“We couldn’t think of a better partner to bring Bored Cow to brick-and-mortar than Sprouts. We feel Sprouts shoppers are strongly aligned with our mission, and share in our passion for sustainable, plant-powered products,” said Tomorrow Farms CEO Ben Berman. “Whether you’re a long-time dairy drinker or a plant-based milk enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled with the taste, nutrition, and functionality of Bored Cow.”
