A flow wrap packaging technology can allow cheese processors to
package a variety of different goods with Modified Atmosphere
Packaging (MAP) on a single line, according to its manufacturer.

PFM packaging machinery claims that its Scirocco servo-assisted horizontal flow pack machine can provide hermetic sealing for up to 200 cheese packs a minute - depending on the variety of packaging sizes. According to the manufacturer, the single jaw system design allows for cheese makers and other processors to package a number of different foods in various package sizes, while reducing product changeover time. As part of its attempts to step up operating efficiency, the company claims the machine has been designed to allow easier access for plant workers to all sides of the product. PFM says that the system also uses a cantilevered hygienic construction for automatic height adjustment, which can allow for easier cleaning and improved flexibility in adapting to a number of different uses in food production. The manufacturer says that this is vital to allow for easier cleaning, particularly for hidden parts of the machine. All mechanical and electrical components are housed at the back of the packager for maintenance purposes, the group said. PFM says the development has been adopted by a UK-based cheese maker, which was experiencing increasing pressure to provide a wider variety of products and packaging sizes for its customers. According to PFM, processors AJ and RG Barber was hoping to find a more efficient system for packaging the 65 tonnes of its cheese products that it sells to each week. The processors had previously used two separate production lines to meet this demand, though PFM claims that it has been able to reduce this workload onto a single line through developing the Scirocco wrap machine. AJ and RG Barber produce a number of different cheese products from cheddar, red leicester, double Gloucester, wensleydale, white Cheshire and Lancashire ranging in packaging sizes from 2.5g and 5kg to 20kg.
