Danisco is broadening its range of specialty fats with the
introduction of Salatrim, a low-calorie alternative available for
the European bakery and confectionery industries. The product was
given its final approval from the EU on 1st December.

The product, which will trade under the name Benefat, featured at this years Food Ingredients Europe exhibition in November and attracted great interest from calorie conscious consumers. Products that contain Benefat are ultimately targeted at adults who want to significantly reduce their calorie intake whilst still feeling they are eating an indulgent food product.

Benefat is a family of triglyceride blends made from the short and long chain fatty acids commonly present in the diet. Benefat products are designed to replace conventional fats and oils in dairy, confectionery and bakery products, with significantly reduced energy and fat content.

Fat is important as such that it provides food with a good taste, but Benefat, arriving at a time when debate is rife about the crisis obesity amongst children and adults, provides the industry with an alternative. The product is set to feature as an ingredient in snack bars to sweet goods.

"Benefat is a constructive fat-based alternative to conventional fat in the diet. Benefat offers food processors a safe and effective way of improving the nutritional profile of foods without compromising taste, as the calorie value is one third lower than ordinary fat", said President Torben Svejgaar of Danisco Emulsifiers.
