2. Danone
French dairy giant Danone retained its runner-up status in the Rabobank Dairy Top 20 with an increase in dairy sales.
It reported dairy revenue of US$20.2bn (€15.2bn) for 2013, an increase on the US$19.4bn (€15.1bn) cited in 2012.
Danone has, in recent years, suffered as a result of falling fresh dairy consumption in Europe, and a false food safety alert triggered by Fonterra's whey protein concentrate (WPC) botulism scare in 2013 added to its problems.
Aside from these hurdles, the company's US business Dannon made significant strides in the country's yogurt sector, and it acquired West African dairy Fan Milk.
